I am concerned primarily with color and then with texture and design. I love to explore combinations of colors layered onto each other and then to scratch onto the canvas or board and pull back to discover some colors underneath. To me, painting is a process that involves the thick layering of paint until the design and colors are pleasing. I use palette knives, large and smaller brushes, my fingers and hands and any other available tools to apply the paint.
When I start preparing the painting surface with textures, I might think about what color families I will use for the painting or I might have a feeling or a place in mind but I never have a design for how the painting will look. So, for me painting is an adventure in color, design, and texture. I am informed by the contemporary painting of oil artist Brian Rutenberg, who in his writings, introduced me to the concept that paintings could "sing." I have spent time in Mexico and am influenced by the rich color and layering in the environment. I believe the presence of Mexico with its rich artistic heritage, is in my painting. |
